Historical Mosquito Fleet Ports
Kitsap County is rich with history, dating all the way back from the County’s tribal-native inhabitants to early settlements. As the number of residents grew, the lack of infrastructure such as roads and bridges became a huge concern. Due to the water surrounding the county, small steam boats as thick as mosquitos swarmed Puget Sound and served Kitsap’s communities from 1853- 1940. This led to the birth of the Mosquito Fleet.
Currently, there are 40 historical Mosquito Fleet Ports along the Kitsap Peninsula, all of which has a unique story behind it. Today, the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners, working mayors, agencies, and interested organizations are working to preserve Mosquito Fleet to maintain its rich history for everyone to enjoy for generations to come.
Kitsnap Nature & Recreation
Explore Kitsap County’s nature based attractions! See Washington State’s Official Marine Mamma, the orca whale and other whales such as the humpback whales, and gray whales. Head over to the Kitsap Penninsula for top-notch eagle watching. In the spring months (April – May), eagles are typically nesting and raising their hatchlings, so you might encounter a sight to see. If you are a bird-watching enthusiast, we recommend visiting the wetlands, Clear Creek Trail and the Old Mill Park.
If you prefer more of an indoor experience, you can also visit the Bug Museum to learn about numerous bug and reptile species.
