As usual, we've got live music in the Beachfront Martini Lounge Friday night. This week, come help us welcome "Soul Siren." Music starts at 8PM. But you should come early for dinner. Maybe ribs with our own housemade BBQ sauce. Or the angus teryiaki burger. It's been getting rave reviews. Wash it down with one of our signature martinis or a local microbrew. TGIF!

The Best Western Plus Silverdale Beach Hotel is pleased to be hosting the ARC Awareness dinner tomorrow. It's a mini "bite of Kitsap" with four local eateries competeing for your affection. Proceeds benefit the ARC of Kitsap County. Call Ken at 360-697-6858 for more details. Some seats are still available!

In our ongoing efforts to help you "eat, drink and be merry," we have DJ Blackwell playing your favorites tonight in the Beachfront Martini Lounge, along with specially priced selections from the dinner menu, and specially priced drinks from the bar. You have no excuse to stay home and do nothing. See you tonight.

When you think of world class scuba diving, Washington's Puget Sound may not be the first to come to mind.  Believe it or not, the waters around the Kitsap Peninsula are teaming with marine life.  Dungeness Crabs, seals, sea lions, and even the Giant Pacific Octopus are just some of the species you might see while diving in this region - all without the crowds common in the more tropical dive locales.

With the winter months comes the best time of year to dive in the area, as the water visibility is at it's best during this time.  Divers keep themselves warm with specialized dry suits, but the extra rubber is well worth the effort to view some of the best cold-water diving in the world.  There's plenty of spots to suit divers of any ability levels, ensuring that the seasoned diver and the total newbie can both enjoy the beautiful waters around the Kitsap Peninsula.

A short drive south from our Silverdale hotel brings divers to the Harpers Ferry/Fishing Dock dive site.  This is a great dive to get you aquainted with the region, and does not require a boat.  There is no major current in this area, and the depth does not exceed 50ft at the highest tide.  This is an ideal place for the novice to intermediate diver looking for a great shore-access dive.  For those looking to get out a bit deeper, check out the Puget Sound boat trips available in the region.  Not only will you get great guidance underwater, but you'll also get to spend the day on a boat!

If you'd love to get underwater but have never gone diving before, you'll love the training available at the nearby Sound Dive Center.  Located just a short drive from our hotel, the center offers entry-level training in a safe environment to get you breathing underwater before you know it!  Looking to improve your skills?  They also offer courses in night diving, search + recovery, underwater photography, deep diving, and more!

Nothing tops off a day of adventure underwater like a great snack and refreshing drink back on dry land.  Head back to the BEST WESTERN Silverdale Beach Hotel and grab a seat at our Beachfront Martini Lounge.  If you scored some great footage during your dive, you can use our complimentary wireless interent to get your pics online and share your day with the world.

The title of the Poulsbo Jewel Box Theatre’s new production is a long one:
The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society’s Production of “A Christmas Carol”
. It’s absurdly long, you might say—but, in the spirit of Monty Python, absurdity is exactly what the production is aiming for.

The “dramatic society” mentioned in the title is fictional and the play depicts the efforts of this fictional theatre group to stage a production of “A Christmas Carol”. Essentially, we are watching a production of a musical that’s depicting the production of a musical. It’s a clever device, one that’s been used as far back as Shakespeare, and in this production, it makes for nothing less than uproarious comedy as all manner of arguments and mishaps take place among the characters.

It’s both a spoof of, and tribute to, the beloved Dickens classic we all grew up with, and it is sung and performed in perfectly hilarious fashion by a talented local cast including Rilla Hughes as Thelma/Scrooge and Alice Ingle as the Heckler, with direction by Randy G. Powell.

The show begins on November 15th, playing every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until December 8th. Tickets are $16 ($14 for seniors, students and military) and are available for purchase online.

If you frequent the Kitsap County area and enjoy live theatre, take note of the Jewel Box’s other upcoming productions which include another British farce, Clever Dick, playing Jan. 24 to Feb. 15, 2014. You can also catch the musicals I Love You, You’re Perfect Now Change!, playing Mar. 21 to Apr. 1, and Tom Foolery, playing Jul. 18 to Aug. 2.

The Jewel Box Theatre is located in Poulsbo, around 17 minutes from the BEST WESTERN PLUS Silverdale Beach Hotel. Stay tuned to our blog to get the heads up on the best upcoming local events and attractions in Silverdale and around Kitsap County.

Looking for some great Halloween fun this October?  You won’t want to miss the Kitsap Haunted Fairgrounds!  This popular event has been running since 2003 at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.  Put on almost by a partnership between volunteers and the Kitsap Country Parks and Recreation, this long standing event has drawn a crowd every year since its inception.

This past year, the group has joined forces with the Kingston-North Kitsap Rotary to create the non-profit company Kitsap Haunted Productions.  The collaboration with the Rotary intends to directly benefit the various Rotary efforts for the community, while growing the event every year.

Every year the event adds another chapter to the fictional Kitsap Fairgrounds story, with recent years revolving around the infamous (fictional) fairgrounds employees Otis and Leester.  The two gruesome characters are suspected of playing a role in the disappearance of locals and tourists alike.  With law enforcement too terrified to approach their barn, the horrors have continued every year since the bodies of a missing family were found at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.

This year promises to yet another healthy dose of creepiness, as the plot has thickened once again.  A recent meteor shower has deposited an unknown slimy compound all over the Fairgrounds.  The slime seems to have regenerative properties, strong enough to raise the dead…which isn’t good considering the number of ‘missing persons’ there are buried around Otis and Leester’s abode….

With general admission at just $12, you can be sure that this is great value for the whole family.  There’s even a live performance to keep you entertained while you wait in line!  The event runs every Friday and Saturday night from Friday October 11th until Saturday Nov. 2nd (Post-Halloween dates are just $7!), with a special event planned for Thursday Oct 31st.

There’s no official age requirement for the event, but attendees should be warned that this event is not for the meek.  There is a special “lights on” showing from 5-6pm that is a little bit more kid-friendly, but still spooky.  From 6pm till 11pm you can expect to be startled, shocked, and scared.  Come if you dare…

Runners rejoice! Silverdale’s neighbor to the north, Poulsbo, will play host to two running events over the next two months.

On October 13th, it’s the Poulsbo Marathon. Registration is $40 for the 10k, $80 for the half marathon, $100 for the full marathon and $225 for a marathon relay team. There will be medals and ribbons for finishers in each category. There will also be hot and cold refreshments and snacks for runners once they finish.

On November 12th, you can support a good cause at the Poulsbo Veteran’s Day 5k Run. All proceeds from the run will be donated to the Seattle Fisher House and the Bremerton chapter of the Disabled American Vets. Free Parking is available for the event at the Poulsbo Suzuki dealership on Viking Ave. From there, you can catch a free shuttle to the waterfront where the marathon begins. Early registration is just $15 while day-of registration will cost you $25. The registration cost includes a free beer and bratwurst when you reach the finish line at Sound Brewery!

For those who are new to marathons, or those just getting into the wonderful world of running, we’ve compiled a few tips on how to prepare for the upcoming races:

3 Tips to Help Prepare For Your First Marathon

1. Ramp down your training in advance of race day.
It’s natural to think that the harder you train, the better you’ll perform when it comes time to race. But as running expert Jon Roche suggests, intense training too close to race day can wear your body down and actually inhibit your competitive advantage. He recommends scaling your training regimen down to 75% of your workload three weeks before the race, 50% two weeks before and 25% in the final week.

2. Break in your gear long before the race begins. If the upcoming marathon has you wanting a new pair of sneakers or shorts, track and field coach Andrew Allden recommends that you take sufficient time to break in and become acquainted with your new equipment before race day. When you’re running 10, 20 or 40 km, you want to feel completely comfortable with what’s on your feet and your body.

3. Don’t underestimate the importance of nutrition and hydration. What you put into you body on and before race day is one of the most important factors in determining your success and ensuring that you don’t succumb to injury and fatigue. Take a cue from these 11 marathon nutrition and hydration tips.

If you’re seeking hotel accommodation for the Poulsbo Marathon or 5k Run, consider the BEST WESTERN PLUS Silverdale Beach Hotel. We are located just 15 minutes from Poulsbo in a picturesque beach setting. It’s the perfect place for a weary runner to relax in comfort and style.

The days are getting shorter, the leaves are starting to change color and nighttime strolls increasingly require a sweater. There’s no doubt about it folks: summer is almost over. But don’t dismay just yet, because September in Kitsap County offers numerous ways to enjoy what’s left of the sunny season. Here are a few suggestions:

Tomato Taste-Off at the Poulsbo Farmers Market – Sat. Sept. 14

It’s a vegetable. It’s a fruit. It’s one of the most versatile ingredients you’ll find. But while most of our everyday encounters with tomatoes involve ketchup or pizza sauce, there is much to be appreciated when enjoying a fresh tomato. There’s a real art to growing them too. At the Poulsbo Farmers Market Tomato Taste-Off, you can sample a variety of beautiful, locally-grown tomatoes with all different flavors, colors and textures—enough to satisfy even the most discerning tomato aficionado.

Keyport Fest – Sat. Sept. 21

September rarely fails to offer up some great late-summer weather on the Kitsap Peninsula and we hope that’s the case for this year’s annual festival in the town of Keyport. The festival events include a classic car show & shine, free activities for kids, live music and dance, a family dining area and dozens of booths and vendors. The events take place from 9am until 4:30pm near the corner of Washington Ave and SR 308.

Brownsville Appreciation Day – Sat. Sept. 28

How does a pirate zombie treasure hunt sound? Terrifying? Well, rest assured, the pirate zombie treasure hunt at the annual Brownville Appreciation Day festival has no real pirates or zombies, just costume-clad, Nerf gun-wielding competitors hunting for hidden bounty through a forested maze. That’s just one of the attractions at B.A.D. Others include live music, a custom car show, art show, crafts fair and yacht association rendezvous. Events take place from 9am to 5pm at the Port of Brownsville marina.

We encourage our guests here at the BEST WESTERN PLUS Silverdale Beach Hotel to check out these fun events—they’re all within a 15-minute drive of our hotel!
