Kitsap County embodies the stunning beauty of the Pacific Northwest with its majestic forests and rugged inlets teeming with wildlife. If you’re staying with us this summer, be sure to get outside and check out some of the area’s amazing scenery and wildlife.
Kitsap County is home to a wide variety of birds year round with large spring and fall migrations, winter shorebirds, eagles and osprey abounding. Waterfronts are home to teeming populations of ducks, loons and herons. Some of the best places in the area to view the avian wildlife are the Clear Creek Trails, the Hansville Greenway and the Theler Wetlands. Check out the Kitsap Audubon Society’s website for more information about birding in the area.
There are plenty of nature walks through spectacular Pacific Northwest scenery in Kitsap County. One of the most accessible and well maintained is the Clear Creek Trail which meanders through wetlands, woodlands and tidelands right in the heart of Silverdale. A great feature of this trail is an interpretive centre that explains much of the local flora and fauna in an accessible fashion. For more information about nature walks in the area, visit the Kitsap Peninsula Tourism Office.
The waters around Kitsap County are home to two types of whales. The most common are orcas, which frequently journey up inlets in their pursuit of salmon. In the spring, Gray Whales become equally frequent for a brief window as they pass through Washington on their journey from Mexico to Alaska. If you’re out and about on the waters of Puget Sound, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for these majestic creatures that might appear at any moment! However, if you simply can’t wait for a chance sighting to occur, check out The Puget Sound Express, a whale watching tour company offering guaranteed sightings on every excursion.

Historical Mosquito Fleet Ports
Kitsap County is rich with history, dating all the way back from the County’s tribal-native inhabitants to early settlements. As the number of residents grew, the lack of infrastructure such as roads and bridges became a huge concern. Due to the water surrounding the county, small steam boats as thick as mosquitos swarmed Puget Sound and served Kitsap’s communities from 1853- 1940. This led to the birth of the Mosquito Fleet.
Currently, there are 40 historical Mosquito Fleet Ports along the Kitsap Peninsula, all of which has a unique story behind it. Today, the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners, working mayors, agencies, and interested organizations are working to preserve Mosquito Fleet to maintain its rich history for everyone to enjoy for generations to come.

If you’re a beer lover and are going to be in the Silverdale area, then have we got the place for you! Bainbridge Island Brewing is a craft brewery located on scenic Bainbridge Island, WA. This relatively new brewery is fast becoming a hotspot for locals and visitors alike to both learn about the art of making beer and to get together for a fun night out.

Brewmaster Russell Everett has local roots. A Bainbridge High School that went on to graduate law school, Everett chose to come home to the island to begin the brewery with his father instead of settling for that boring old lawyer title. Everett aims to push the boundaries of traditional beer and constantly develops exciting and original varieties. His current flagship beer lineup boasts varieties of Kolsch, IPA, Pale Ale, Amber Ale and Stout. Where he truly struts his stuff are in his limited-edition seasonals, which come and go from year to year. Currently, he offers the Spring Session IPA, Old Toe Jam (an American Barleywine), Bonnie Prince Barley (a Scotch Wee Heavy Ale) and the Puget Sound Hoptopus (Imperial Double IPA).
The brewery also hosts a number of weekly events and live performances. Every Monday night at 7:00 is trivia night, where bragging rights and (and maybe more) are for grabs. Music to Our Beers hits the brewery every Thursday for live music courtesy of the Island Music Guild. For info on upcoming special musical performances, check out the brewery’s events page.
Interested in checking out Bainbridge Island Brewing? We’d love to host you at the Silverdale Beach Hotel. Located a short, scenic drive from Bainbridge Island and offering some of the most scenic beach views & relaxing ambiance of anywhere in Washington, you’ll be happy you chose us. See you soon!
It might not seem like it, but Easter is already just around the corner. What was once strictly a religious observance has now become a cultural holiday of a very different order. First records of the Easter Bunny come from German Lutherans, whose folk legends saw the Easter Hare judging whether or not children had been good or not in the season leading up to Eastertide. In those days, well-behaved children were said to receive colored eggs and gifts from the Easter Hare’s basket.
Today, the Easter Bunny is most well-known for hiding candy eggs, other goodies and sometimes even edible chocolate caricatures of himself for children (though word has it that adults have been known to indulge from time to time).
If you want to get into the Easter spirit while in Kitsap County, then the Kitsap Live Steamers in Port Orchard, WA is where you’ll want to be. The Kitsap Steamers are a nonprofit organization that runs an impressive mini-steam railway that offers rides and educates the public about this fantastic mode of transportation. They have a fantastic network of mini railroads and an impressive collection of working railcars.
On Saturday, April 19, The Steamers will be holding their annual Easter celebration, which consists of a special Easter train for children and their parents and an exciting Easter Egg Hunt that takes place in South Kitsap Regional Park. If you’re interested in these events, make sure you contact Jessie Turner at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information!
Are you staying in Silverdale over the Easter break and interested in participating in the festivities with the Kitsap Live Steamers? Luckily for you, the Silverdale Beach Hotel is only a 20-minute drive (and a beautiful one at that) from Port Orchard! When you’ve had your fill of trains and chocolate, come back and relax in one of our comfortable rooms, equipped with incredible amenities!

Silverdale’s first settlers arrived over 150 years ago. These first settlers were loggers who were looking to expand their operations up the peninsula. By the 1880s, many Scandinavian immigrants arrived to find work in the burgeoning timber industry or to farm the fertile land. By the late 1880s, a thriving Farmer’s Cooperative had formed and farmers shipped their goods from Farmer’s Cooperative Wharf to places as far away as San Francisco. During the height of the Cooperative, as many as 50,000 cases of eggs and 60,000 chickens were shipped annually!
At the turn of the century, high-capacity steamships began making regular trips to Silverdale. As a result, Silverdale became a hub of commercial trade and entertainment. Today, Old Town Silverdale celebrates its past as a lively cultural district. Want to check out some historical sites? Take a look at this interactive Points of Interest map.
